National Preparedness Month Tips on How to be Ready for Anything!

Posted by Alexis Washington

The month of September is officially National Preparedness Month.

How do you know if you’re prepared? Well, fortunately for you we took the time to craft out some tips on how to survive the unexpected. This list provides preventative measures that are necessary to get through any disaster.

In the event of a droughtChoose appliances that are more energy and water efficient.

In the event of extreme heat Stay indoors as much as possible

In the event of a hurricane Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so that they are more wind resistant.

In the event of a tornado Close all windows and go to a predesigned area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar of the lowest building level.

In the event of winter storms or extreme cold Drive only if absolutely necessary. If you must drive, travel in the day; don’t travel alone; keep others informed of your schedule; stay on main roads and avoid road shortcuts.

In the event of a pandemic If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illnesses.

In the event of an emergency evacuation – If you have a car, keep a full tank of gas in it if an evacuation seems likely. Keep a half tank of gas in it at all times in case of an unexpected need to evacuate. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies and unable to pump gas during power outages. Plan to take one car per family to reduce congestion and delay.

In the event of a cyber attack Do not use the same password twice. Change your password on a regular basis.

In the event of a blackout Use only flashlights for emergency lighting. Never use candles during a blackout or power outage due to extreme risk of fire.

In the event of thunderstorms and lightening Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightening can cause serious damage.
