- Party/Dance Bands
When The Pink Flamingos started out on the corporate scene much of the action took place in Orlando, Florida. Many people, of course, assumed that the band chose their name in reference to the tropical climate and frequent beach themes, but some wanted to know more.
“We were living in the mountains in New Mexico," says show designer Lisa De Wolf. "The house we’d built, our center of work, theater, etc. was about 95% finished. We’d just brought all of our stuff there…portfolios, life time art works, all of our puppets…for at the time we were doing lots of children’s theater. We also had a printing press (since we were running a printing company simultaneously with the Children’s Theater). You name it we brought it all in. Well, it was Christmas night 1987, and it turns out our new chimney had a faulty flue. Everything burnt to the ground. The snow was too deep for the fire trucks, so we just watched it all burn down. Some of us didn’t even get our shoes on. " "That night, the night of the fire, we all sat down at a friends house and made a unanimous decision to transition away from the various business activities we were involved in and focus on music and entertainment. One of the group members suggested we call ourselves The Pink Flamingos because in Egyptian mythology the “red bird” rising from the ashes, like the phoenix, symbolized taking a new direction, a new rebirth as a result of the “fire” that burns away the old, the past. Well, the analogy sure hit home and so, the birth of The Pink Flamingos."
The band then took their act on the road. They hit the corporate market with a whole new interpretation, certain of ruffling some feathers. "The Pinks" decided from the start to be completely self-contained. Often when marketing their act the band had to explain what that meant. Few people had heard of a band that handled all of their own transportation, sound, lights, backdrop, costumes as well as providing all of their own (health) food.
"People get to know us, how we live, work, eat, and are surprised because we are a band, but to do all we do we have to choose a pretty clean, clear life style just to maintain the necessary energy level."
"We wanted from the start to provide our clients with something they couldn’t get anywhere else. We got the idea that we would make each meeting planner, agent, and client a hero. Audience participation began back in 1990. One night at a small party in Albuquerque, the audience and the band had so much fun we had to bring it to the corporate stage."
For many years "The Pinks" would show up with their one truck of equipment and busload of musicians at the event site. Today they’ll fly in from their home base or last job site and meet up with one of the three matching equipment trucks ready to bring their latest ideas and looks to the stage.
It’s been thirteen years since The Pink Flamingos did their first engagement. In that time "The Pinks" have changed Corporate Entertainment forever. “Now people expect audience participation at every party. We also have come to expect The Flamingos to come up with the next great idea!”.
From the World Cup Soccer Finals in France to local charities to performances in India and all over the U.S. and European Corporate markets and the high society events, The Pink Flamingos remain the leaders in their field. With more return engagements, "The Pinks" maintain their reputation of excellence.
As popular as they are with their clients, they are a bit unpopular with some other performing acts. Since the Pink Flamingos were responsible for introducing 4 hours non-stop (no breaks) evenings, multiple costume changes, customizing each evening for their clients and most important that they are there to serve the clients needs above and beyond their own personal interests. More than anything else their dedication to doing what works for the event is what makes The Pink Flamingos unique.
Today if you are seeking 'The Pinks' you’ll either find them on the road performing at corporate events, society functions, theaters, weddings, general sessions, or you’ll find them at their home base in the New Mexico Sandia Mountains. This center is where they do all of their own marketing as they have from the beginning. There is a buzz here…people working in the recording studio on projects such as "Watchkeeper"; folks designing and making new costumes, and developing set ideas and props. Here you’ll find The Pink Flamingos rehearsing and training and preparing with a dedication to constantly reinvent themselves creatively while maintaining their integrity to service and devotion to making each show unique and the folks who hire them a hero.
