Coffee Break Series (Episode 5) – Joe Theismann

Posted by Stephanie Guida

This week on Eagles Talent’s Coffee Break Series, Sheldon sat down for an exclusive interview with former star quarterback of the Washington Redskins, broadcaster, and entrepreneur, Joe Theismann. Throughout the interview, Joe grants viewers advice on adjusting and how to create a proper game plan as well as offers inspiration and motivation to viewers during this time of the unknown (and gives the correct pronunciation of his name). Joe states several times throughout that we don’t know what life will be like once this is all over, but the things that we can control will remain consistent.

A major focus point for Joe throughout the interview is giving your whole 100% in everything you do. If you don’t give 100%, you will never get the full value of what you are trying to accomplish. Also, don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do or cannot be something. It is important during this time to still take pride in who you are and pride in how you present yourself. Joe tells viewers that they need to be proud of what they’re doing everyday. This will make you feel better about yourself and better about the work that you do. Some advice he gives to employers is to keep in mind that every person on your team is an individual. He says if you run your team the right way, you can be confident in and respect the decisions your employees make because you know they will line up with the company values.

Advice that Joe gives to those struggling to adjust is the importance of having a game plan. If you try to stick to a set plan during this time, it will make things easier for everyone. You need to find what works best for you and create a schedule for each day. Start preparing now for when this is over. How will you stay the same? How will you change? These are the things you need to do in order to try to stay sane during a time where we are confined to our homes. While Joe emphasizes the importance of a game plan, he also notes how important it is to be flexible in that plan. Things will change and you may get thrown off course but you can’t allow those changes to throw a hinge into your plan. It is important to know how to adjust. Joe advises viewers to take an hour to themselves everyday, go for a walk, get fresh air, allow your mind time to rest.

Joe is no stranger to adjusting to unprecedented changes. He suffered an injury that ended his football career. In the interview, Joe tells viewers that at the time before his injury, he feels that he was a selfish person. The injury caused him to take a step back and reevaluate who he was. While his injury was devastating and did change his life, it also helped him to flourish and grow. We all need to understand that change is a part of life and while it may seem like the end of the world when it happens, in time you will see how that change helped you to grow into a better version of yourself.

Joe ends the interview on a positive note, reminding viewers that it will not always be this way, but while it is, we need to make the best of it. Joe’s advice on dealing with change is to embrace it and wonder how you can make it work for you. He reminds viewers to continue adhering to the rules set in place and that we will get through this and there will be a better world on the other side.
