Leadership keynote speaker Sheila Murray Bethel, PhD. comments on Charlie Rose’s interview with Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schultz and how he had the courage and humility to turn a company around by bringing all of his people with him for the journey.
My favorite place to stay current on just about everything is the Charlie Rose Show on Bloomberg. I always have paper and pencil handy to capture pieces of knowledge and insight from his diverse guests. [A few weeks ago] I tuned in and he did not disappoint. Charlie was interviewing Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks.
It was a fascinating example of leadership guts. Schultz told Charlie that when he came back into Starbucks as CEO, he knew he had to re-vise the company. He closed 10,000 US stores for one day and brought all of the mangers into one meeting so he could personally lay out the future vision of the company and their role in making it a success. Most companies would not have courage to loose one-day’s revenue from 10,000 stores, but Schultz said it was critical to get everyone back on the same page. He easily made up for the one day lost with the renewed excitement and commitment of his managers.
