Tis The Season … Make It Meaningful by Sarah Eshiwani

Posted by Alexis Washington

With the help of the top humorous speakers, here are important tips to keep in mind during this holiday season.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but with that edict comes the pitfalls of modern life — stress during the Christmas season. The shopping, the crowds, the expectations, gifts, visiting family, travel, cooking, baking and everything else added on top of it. It can be overwhelming even for the jolliest of people. It’s small wonder adults don’t appreciate the season and its meaning anymore.

2420So how do we take back Christmas and make it that nostalgic time of year — a Norman Rockwell painting if you will? How do we go back to a simpler time when Christmas was about family and goodwill to all men? In her blog, humorist speaker Judy Carter says to beat the holiday blues, we need to butter them. She says we all need to feel good about something. She suggests volunteering, buying groceries for someone who’s unemployed, or simply feeding somebody else’s parking meter with your spare change.

Christmas in and of itself is not stressful. We add more stress onto ourselves in pursuit of Christmas ‘things’ and not the true Christmas spirit. Sometimes we need to step back and smell the poinsettias. In an article in the Huffington Post, Ron Culberson (stress management speaker) surmises how we can make the holidays better. He suggests:

  • Focusing on the moment.
  • Being grateful first.
  • Letting people know you appreciate them.

Christmas is a time to be grateful for what we have and share that abundance with those who do not. The Christmas story is about hope, giving and rejoicing. It is not about buying the latest toy, impressing others with our gifts or outdoing our neighbors with decorations. Let us reclaim the season and be jolly.
