Biography

Dennis Gillan is an ordinary guy with an extraordinary story of perseverance. After years of self-imposed silence regarding the suicide deaths of his brothers, Dennis shares his story of survival and the audience responds!

As a professional mental health advocate, speaker, and author, Dennis brings his inspirational story to audiences and venues anywhere and everywhere. It helps that he is not a licensed counselor, just a guy who had two very tragic losses to suicide, his two brothers. Dennis is a much sought-after speaker because he is able to communicate his message in an inspiring way, and often his talks end with standing ovations. In 2020, he founded Half a Sorrow Foundation – an organization that works to improve mental health by promoting real conversations.

Transforming Lives Through Transparency The Power to Change Lives

This talk is truly now a calling and  has morphed into me telling my story to a real call to action for everyone in the audience  to get comfortable talking about tough topics like mental health and suicide prevention. I have spoken to business leaders, military personnel, faith leaders, students, and basically anyone who will listen, all across the United States and even internationally.  One school had 1,000 students show up and after the talk the sound guy told me that I had them the entire time. Because of my life experiences, losing Mark and Matt, and the volunteer work that I do for the cause, I feel that I am uniquely qualified to talk about this subject and the audience agrees.

All of my reviews on Facebook are 5’s and that is the highest you can go. Army, Air Force, Churches, Colleges, Businesses, Homeless Shelters, you name it I’ve spoken at it and the response is always the same—-great job and you need to keep speaking about this and nobody does it better!

3 - 2 - 1 Powerful Story

In this talk, Dennis takes your audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as he explains how he recovered from the suicide deaths of both of his brothers. Following the latest guidelines on speaking about suicide and suicide prevention, Dennis will discuss the warning signs of mental distress, the benefits of therapy, and how he found peace in sobriety.

Dennis has a unique presentation style and will use humor to help this message land. In the end, the message is real and relatable for all who attend.

Breakout Session: Question, Persuade, Refer

Dennis is certified to provide this training from the QPR Institute. The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught Gatekeeper training in the world.

Come To Me

This is a new workshop where the participants consider both sides of the mental illness equation—-those who have the condition, and those around them. In this session, Dennis sets up practical sessions where coming out is practiced and the proper response is rehearsed. Both sides will walk away with the understanding that there is no stigma necessary when it comes to mental health.

Dennis has a powerful message to share on the topic of suicide prevention. His story is profoundly tragic, yet full of hope, courage, and even humor as he recounts his imperfect journey towards healing. I am thankful for Dennis’ willingness to speak out and break the silence and stigma associated with seeking help.
