Why Book

  • Liane is the real deal. Both an entertaining speaker that audiences love and a strategist with over 20 years experience in helping teams across a wide variety of industries (and a Ph.D. in organizational psychology to back it up). But, don’t let the Ph.D. scare you.
  • Liane won’t be caught dead in a tweed jacket or using a sleep-inducing PowerPoint deck. Instead, she delivers engaging stories, a-ha moments, and lots of laughs from start to finish.
  • Liane is not only an audience favorite, but she’s easy to work with, which makes you – conference directors, meeting planners, and leaders tasked with hiring a speaker – look good. In fact, clients are surprised and delighted to see that Liane is…

Biography

Liane has never climbed Mount Everest (and never will). So far, she’s never been in space. She doesn’t even have an Olympic gold medal (although she did win the grade 9 Phys Ed award). But the prize for solving the most difficult team challenges is named after her (no, not really, but someday it probably will be).

For the past 25 years, Liane has researched and advised teams on how to achieve high performance. Known as the “teamwork doctor,” she’s worked with teams from the frontlines to the boardroom, across a variety of industries, and around the globe from Boston to Bangkok. In working with hundreds of teams, including 26 Global Fortune 500 companies (and counting), she has developed a unique perspective on the challenges that teams face – and how to solve them.

Beyond her work in the boardroom, Liane is a New York Times Bestselling author of You First: Inspire Your Team to Grow Up, Get Along, and Get Stuff Done and The Good Fight: Use Productive Conflict to Get Your Team and Organization Back on Track. She is also a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review and has been sought by several media outlets, including CNN, NPR, USA Today, The Globe & Mail and Forbes, for her expertise on increasing productivity, enhancing engagement, developing leaders, and as one client put it, “dealing with the damn drama!”

As a keynote speaker, Liane has spoken for audiences as big as 2000 and as intimate as 20.  Regardless of the size, she delivers the perfect combination of education and entertainment that leaders and teams need to get unstuck and make an impact on their organizations. She gets even the most serious audiences laughing by telling it like it is—including stories about many of the unbelievable situations she’s experienced working with (and on) teams. (And, by the way, she’s not afraid to admit that she learned most of these lessons the hard way). In between the laughter and stories, she provides a proven model and framework, along with the latest research, so that attendees walk away with the tools to start making their teams better from the moment they leave the room.

Liane’s clients include Amazon, Walmart, TD Bank, RBC, AMD, Google, Bayer, KPMG, Aviva, Maple Leaf Foods, and SONY Interactive Entertainment. Liane has experience and expertise across a wide range of industries, but with each client, she customizes her keynotes so that your audience feels like she “gets” you and has been working with your organization for years.

The Good Fight: Why Productive Conflict is the Key to a Healthy Workplace Community

As leaders, we know the importance of creating a happy, healthy workplace for our employees. We invest in communication workshops, recognition programs, and wellness fairs. But, in our pursuit of the perfect workplace, we often end up avoiding the “hard conversations” that are required to execute strategy, manage team dynamics, and develop individuals. When that happens, our businesses stagnate, engagement decreases, and stress levels increase –the exact opposite of what our organizations and people need to thrive.

The secret is to get naturally conflict avoidant humans to embrace productive conflict – the kind that strengthens relationships rather than destroying them. In this keynote, you’ll understand why productive conflict is vital to a strong workplace community and identify ways to create it in your organization. In addition, you will:

  • Understand why avoiding conflict actually derails productivity, erodes culture, and leads to more stress—not less
  • Learn how to overcome your team’s conflict aversion and teach them practical strategies to work through any issue—without the drama.
  • Discover ways to systematize conflict so that it takes less of a toll on your employees – increasing their engagement and contribution
You First How to Change Your Team for the Better – from any Seat at the Table

Organizations of all sizes depend on teams for productivity, growth, and innovation. Unfortunately, even on the most talented teams, dysfunction is the norm – not the exception. And, to make things worse, most teams are doing little to make it better, either because they aren’t aware of the problem or because they’re waiting for “someone else to fix it.”

The good news is that you don’t have to wait. You don’t need the jerk to get fired, your boss to move on, or a pricey consultant to turn your team around. In this keynote, you’ll learn how you can change your team from any seat at the table and take steps to help your team get along and get stuff done.

In this keynote, you will:

  • Proactively identify the 5 toxic behaviors before they derail your team
  • Understand your team’s dynamics and the three roles that perpetuate cycles of dysfunction
  • Learn the five things you can say and do immediately to change your team for the better, starting today
Change Has Changed: How to Create High Performance in a World Perpetual Change

As a leader, managing change is nothing new. So, why does it feel so much harder now? Because change has changed. It’s no longer an event to prepare for, but a constant reality to cope with. With this unrelenting pace and intensity, your employees don’t have a chance to recover from the last initiative before moving on to the next one. Over time, even the best employees will either stop caring and check out, or try so hard they eventually burn out. While you can’t stop the tsunami of change, as a leader, you have more power than you think to create calm within the storm.

In this keynote, you will:

  • Learn how to inspire high performance even in the midst of significant change and competing priorities
  • Develop the mindset and the language that will allow you to surface and move your team through resistance and drama
  • Receive practical strategies you can use to develop your own resilience so you have the energy, patience, and endurance you need for the long haul.
