This is a story of fierce love, radical hope, and the power of believing in the impossible. When Lindsay Karlin was diagnosed with Canavan disease—a rare and fatal neurological disorder—her doctors told the Karlin family that she would likely live only between five and ten years. They advised the family to put her in an institution and let her die. She would never walk, never talk, and there was no treatment in sight. For most families, the prognosis would have been the end of the story. For the Karlins, it was the beginning.

In this inspiring keynote, Lindsay’s older sister Samantha tells the Karlin family’s story. Fueled by determination and love, they refused to accept the impossible. They built a foundation, rallied scientists, raised millions of dollars, and helped push forward the first-ever gene therapy trial for Canavan disease – the first in the world for a brain disease. It was uncharted territory——but hope never faltered.

Lindsay not only defied her prognosis, she redefined it. She lived until age 27—nearly three times longer than expected—an extraordinary life that continues to inspire people today. And because of the scientific breakthroughs sparked in part by her story, children with Canavan who receive gene therapy are achieving milestones once thought unimaginable.
